It appears that SC state lawmakers have no ability to bypass Gov. Mark Sanford’s refusal of $700 million in federal stimulus money according to Attorney General Henry McMaster.

I applaud Gov. Sanford for standing up for what is right. He doesn’t want to take the stimulus money unless we can use it to pay off debt. This State can’t afford more debt! I personally don’t want to take any of the Federal stimulus money. Will it be tough to do without? Absolutely. Will we have to cut jobs? Yes. But we will make it through these difficult times and we will come out stronger for it.

Balancing the State budget should work no differently than balance your family budget. It’s just a longer list of expenses and a heck and more revenue.

Let me ask you a question. If you were in debt up to your eyeballs and your Uncle Sam came to you and said “Billy Bob, I will loan you this money if you promise to pay me back. Oh, and if I see you doing something with this money and I don’t like it I’m gonna take it back or tell you what you can do with it. One more thing, I need for you to pay it back when I say it’s due.” Would you borrow the money from your Uncle Sam? –Hell No you wouldn’t. Well, some of you probably would because you just don’t care. You’d rather just take the easy way out.

This is no different than what Sanford is doing. You can’t rob Peter to pay Paul. We have run our budget into the ground and now we all are going to have to work hard to get out of this hole we have dug.

Kudos to Gov. Sanford. Keep up the hard work and let’s make getting our budget balanced a top priority in this State. Keep the Federal Government out of our backyard.
